Copi: A New Name for an Old Fish
This story came together over a few years, and served as a nice capstone for my time in public radio. Truly a great example of “just give them a call and see if they pick up.” Taught me that most lower level government officials do actually answer their phones. This story is very NPR explainer in its style, so a lot of reporting supported with clips of folks I talked to and scene tape from a long fun day in the sun at a fish shop in a strip mall.
A Profile of WRWO
I think non-profit low power radio is one of the purest forms of media we have left, so it was my absolute honor to make an audio profile of 94.5 WRWO in Ottawa, Illinois. While working on an archival history project about the station, I sorted through more than 100gb of past shows. I thought it only right to put some of that together with the help of the station founder, Katie Troccoli, to help showcase the efforts of community radio.
American Dendrite
American Dendrite is an upcoming documentary by Adam Present examining the connections in the lives of the people who live along the path of water between Lake Michigan and the Gulf of Mexico. Each time we spoke with someone, we played them a clip from the previous person up the river to prompt their story. We traveled over 1000 miles gathering anecdotes from dozens of stops over the course of two weeks. I served as an audio recordist and field producer on the trip, leading most of the interviews along the way. I returned to the project to complete the sound design of the finished cut.
