Day two of tech for The Aliens at the Virginia Wadsworth Wirtz Center. Annie Baker puts a lot of emphasis on naturalistic dialogue in this play, so that fed into the soundscaping. I did a lot of field recording and mixed that with some specific library sounds to make a realistic depiction of Vermont that could subtlety evolve with the tone of the scene. This was juxtaposed with loud and brash songs between scenes giving us a glimpse into the feelings of the character KJ.

Human Animals provided a unique challenge. Not long after starting rehearsals on the show (not long after the height of the pandemic), we decided the poems that tie the show together wouldn’t be performed live for a variety of reasons. Instead, we decided to record them, which gave us the opportunity to get a bit more creative with how they would be delivered. This final poem is a good representation of the style of the play.
